Business License Requirements

There are a number of conditions which require a Business License in the Town of Tiburon.  Here are a few general guidelines:

  • Your business is located in Tiburon, whether commercial or home-based
  • Your business is headquartered out of town, but you enter Tiburon to do business
  • You own a rental in Tiburon (residential single family through multi-unit rental)
  • Contractors - for general contractors, sub-contractors or "stand-alone" contractors, see the Building Contractors section below

Fees

A new business pays a flat fee for the year, which is prorated for the year based on the time of application. Annual renewals are based on gross receipts from the prior year.

A new Out-of-Town business pays per vehicle driving into Tiburon to conduct business. Annual renewals are also paid per vehicle.

Living Accommodations/Rentals pay per unit.

All businesses pay an additional $14 administration & state-mandated fees in addition to the business license tax.

Other Permits Required

Building Contractors

If you are a contractor doing work that requires a building permit in Tiburon, your business license will be included in the building permit issued by the Building Division. If you are a sub-contractor doing work within the scope of a building permit issued to someone else (like the general contractor or homeowner), you do not need an additional business license.

Building contractors doing work in Tiburon that does not require a building permit are required to obtain a separate business license.

Home Occupation Permits

You may also need a Home Occupation Permit if your business is in Tiburon and operated out of your residence.  Please see the following forms for obtaining a Home Occupation Permit in addition to a Business License.  You may submit your Home Occupation Permit Application & filing fee together with your business license application.

Commercial Businesses

A business license is issued as a receipt of payment of taxes and does not necessarily sanction establishment of a business within the community. New businesses, including the modification of an existing business to a new location, may require additional review by the Planning Division. Additionally, certain professionals must seek separate licensing regulated by the State of California.

Roving Businesses

Anyone coming into Tiburon to do business must obtain a business license, even if your business does not necessarily have a Tiburon address associated with your headquarters or a job site.

Common examples include food trucks, dog walkers, solicitors, or filming and photography. All these businesses require a business license, and potentially additional permitting.

Professional Dog Walkers

Municipal Code prohibits walking more than three dogs in most public places in the Town. However, with a permit, valid business license and current insurance, you can walk up to six (6) dogs at any one time on specified Fire Roads located on Town Open Space. This ensures that all users have a safe and pleasant experience on Town Open Space. Download the application packet and information here.
